The Minister of State for Defence, Erelu Olusola Obada, has challenged the United Kingdom and other international communities to help Nigeria to curtail the growing incidence of crude oil theft in the country by rejecting stolen Nigerian crude destined for their refineries.

Obada spoke on, “Nigerian defence priorities: Domestic stability for regional security” at Chatham in London on Thursday night.

She likened Nigerian stolen crude to the Liberian and Sierra Leonean blood diamond. She, therefore, demanded the confiscation of assets and property of foreign vessel owners and businessmen involved in such blood crude transactions.

The minister said crude oil theft constituted a serious threat to Nigeria’s domestic economic stability and revenue projections, adding that most of the vessels involved in crude oil theft and illegal oil bunkering were often owned by foreigners and foreign entities.

She alleged that the countries that bought stolen crude oil from thieves were the ones encouraging the crime as there would be no market for the oil thieves if some countries’ refineries patronised only genuine crude oil marketers.

On the part of Nigeria, she said the joint task force and the Nigerian Navy would continue to crack down on oil thieves and their collaborators through arrest, prosecution and destruction of illegal refineries.

On the challenge of terrorism, the minister, according to her Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Femi, Adefila, said the government declared a state of emergency in three North-Eastern states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa in response to the threat.

She said, “The armed forces and other security agencies are currently engaged in multi-agency counter-terrorism operations in the three states with a view to bringing the security situation under control.

“President Goodluck Jonathan has deployed a long-term strategy, meant to reduce opportunities for religious radicalism. An important component of this strategy is the establishment of 400 schools for the almajiris

This is a good move but the government should also step up their fight against crude oil theft within the country and be more transparent about the oil and gas industry and governance in general
Leave it for God, don't worry yourself. Leave it for God, don't cry no more.
