Thankfully, SMF version 2.0 and above now has some inbuilt anti-spam control mechanisms to prevent automated spam bots from registering new accounts and posting spam links on your forum so if you are running the latest version of Simple Machines Forum, you no longer need to install a separate mod for spam control.

SMF Forum now offers two in-built methods for spam control: an image verification and a question and a question and answer verification method. For the first one, an image containing a code is displayed to registering users. Such an image is commonly called a Captcha. While it is able to stop many types of spam attacks, it can also be broken.

The second method is the question and answer method where you set a simple question to which a new member needs to answer. In the settings, you will be required to specify the question and answer. You can specify more than one question/answer set and each time a new member tries to register, it picks one of the questions at random.

This method has been known to be more effective than the image verification method. The question should be as simple as possible and to make it even simpler, you can include hints or options. See some examples below:

How many letters are in the word jurisprudence (5, 13 or 27)

5 + 1 = ? (3, 9 or 6?)

What is the name of our planet? (Earth, Sun or Moon?)

The most common colour of a motor car tyre is? (Green, White or Black)

Best Method to Use Out of the Two?
My advice is to use the question and answer method first and if that still does not work, add the image verification (set it to medium).

Here's how to enable the in-built spam control

1. Go to Admin > Configuration > Security and Moderation > Anti-Spam

2. Select Require verification on registration page

3. Scroll down to Configure Verification Methods

4. Leave Visual verification image to display as Blank

5. Number of verification questions user must answer: Here enter the number of questions you want to set for example enter 1 or 2 or whichever number of questions

6. And below in the Verification Questions section enter each question and answer pair, one per line, question on the left and answer on the right.

7. After doing all of that, click on Save

The steps above will enable only the Question and Answer Verification. If after this you are still getting lots of spam, you may include the image verification by coming back here and selecting Visual verification image to display as Medium. When you do this a sample of what the visual image will look like is shown. Note: Don't make the image too easy or too hard. Medium is okay.

In addition to the Anti-Spam settings above, you should also change Method of registration employed for new members to email activation so that they must first activate their registration from their email before they can be allowed to log in and post. To change this setting, do this:

Admin > Members > Registration > Settings

Change the first option Method of registration employed for new members to Email Verification

P.S: For SMF 1.x versions, the inbuilt antispam settings are not there but there is a mod that implements the Question/Answer verification like the one described above. SMF 1.x users can find that mod here: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
