Back Order(ing) a Domain Name
« on: May 05, 2012 »

Hello Tony,

I need to register another domain and build a wordpress site with it but the name i choose is not available. This is the scenario: On Hostgator,it is not avialable though it was few weeks ago when i got the name(i guess some smart guys quickly bought the domain). On Goddady also,it is not available but there is an option to back-order the domain through Goddady at $21. What does this really mean? Do i now have to buy the domain at this price? Is it safe? How will it affect the hosting of my site by hostgator? Please assist.

Thanks

Mike

Basically 'backordering' for a website means that you pay GoDaddy (or anyone else) to try to get the web address for you when it becomes available. They are not guaranteeing anything as the current owner has first choice when it comes to renewing. Plus, you could be waiting for years for the current lease to expire.
My advice would be not to backorder a web address as you could be waiting a while before you get your hands on the domain, if at all. Better still get another unique domain and fire on instead of waiting for ages for one domain already taken by some1.
Hope I am of help,

Another thing is that back ordered domains tend to cost higher than normal domain names.

One more thing : When checking to see if a domain name is available, be careful where you do the search because some websites will go behind your back and buy a domain that you searched for through them so that when you later try to register it, you will see that it has already been registered and you may be left with no choice but to back order it or buy it at a higher price.

Some safe places to search for available domain names are Namecheap, Godaddy and You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

Thanks Tony.I believe most domain registrars, even the so called reputable ones go behind and register domains one checked. In my case,I searched availability of my domain of interest thro these so called big 3 registrars.Just because I allowed few weeks before registration ,by the time I was ready, they had registered that domain. It was very frustrating and annoying at the same time cos the domain name sat in comfortably to what I want to use that blog for.Am now in the market looking for another name.God help me

Sorry about the experience, I can imagine how painful it can be. I've used checkdomain for a very long time but never once experienced this sort of thing with them. In fact some domains which I checked years ago are still available till today.

But based on your own observation I think one can never be too careful. Guess the best thing is not to search at all until you are ready to register the name.
