Agony over missing Professor of Nuclear and Medical Physics at OAU, Ile-Ife, Prof. James Bolarinwa Olomo
The Sun, Tuesday, January 7, 2014

- For family, friends of Prof Olomo, it was a bleak Xmas
- Jonathan, IG, others urged to help find OAU teacher who disappeared last October
By GABRIEL DIKE

Mr. Segun Olomo, a younger brother to missing Professor of Nuclear and Medical Physics, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Professor James Bolarinwa Olomo, has narrated the anguish the family suffered during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

He informed that the family members could not celebrate because of the trauma caused by the disappearance of the Professor.

Prof Olomo travelled to Eket in Akwa Ibom State as a Radiation Safety Adviser (RSA) to an oil and gas company on Thursday, October 17, 2013 and was last heard from on Saturday, October 19, 2013. He has been missing since October 20.

The Chairman, Search Committee, Prof G.A. Jegede, who spoke to the missing professor on October 19 for about 40 minutes, said for two months now, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command has not got across to the committee members or the family after the case was reported. He said also that the hotel where Prof Olomo stayed attempted to cover the incident up until the police were brought into the case.

Segun Olomo who spoke to our correspondent on phone said he had continued to call the three lines of his elder brother without any positive result.
"I even tried the three phone lines today and they didn't go through. Ever since he got missing, I have continued to call the lines every day, but the lines are not reachable," he explained.
According to him, the family members are not happy with the situation of things and have resorted to prayers for God's intervention, even as he explained that it was difficult to monitor the situation in Eket or Uyo from their base.

A statement jointly signed by the search committee, his family, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), OAU chapter and his community and made available to Daily Sun, stated that Prof Olomo left Lagos on Thursday October 17, 2013 by flight to Calabar and to Eket by road via Uyo. He lodged at Hotel Falem, Eket and spent three nights.
The statement added that the Prof planned to return to his residence in Ibadan on Monday, October 21. He was last reached on his phone by a colleague from OAU around 9pm on Saturday October 19, and their conversation lasted more than 40 minutes.
The statement further said his secretary, who also spoke with him around 8pm on Saturday, October 19, alerted colleagues and family members on Monday, October 21, that Professor Olomo had not returned from Eket and could not be reached since Saturday, October 20. "Since then, we have not heard anything from or about him," the secretary reportedly said.
The statement said several efforts were made to locate him, and that the incident was reported to the police and the State Security Service (SSS) in Osun and Akwa-Ibom States. It regretted, however, that "so far, there is no clue concerning his whereabouts."

Also, the family and friends of the missing Professor have either visited or contacted major hospitals in Eket, according to the statement. "There is no case of accident referring to Professor Olomo. Hotel Falem, Eket where he lodged, has been visited by the police, colleagues from OAU and family members. His bag containing one native dress, a towel, sponge and three tellers were found in his hotel room," the statement noted.

The hotel manager and attendants, according to the release, allegedly told the security personnel that Prof Olomo submitted his room key and left the hotel early in the morning of Sunday, October 20 without checking out. They said he never returned to the hotel. His bag was subsequently packed into a store and his room reallocated to another guest.

Prof Jegede said the funny aspect of the matter was that the hotel staff did not report his disappearance to the police, asserting that the hotel staff said they had had similar experiences in the past when guests would go out and return a few days or weeks later and apologize that they travelled or were busy working on the field.
"The manager of the hotel was first arrested and released on bail, but was rearrested about four weeks later when Professor J. B. Olomo's cap and singlet were brought to the DPO of Eket Police Station, Mr. Sunday Digah. Newspaper announcements and press releases have been done in the local and national dailies," the statement further explained.

The ASUU OAU branch, the search committee set up by the Physics Department, the university administration, Otan Aiyegbaju Progressive Union (OAPU), Ile-Ife branch, and the Olomo family have appealed to Nigerians to join in the search for the missing professor.
"We are particularly calling on the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, Governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Chief Godswill Akpabio, Inspector General of Police, Assistant Inspector General of Police, South-South Zone, Commissioners of Police, Akwa-Ibom and Osun States, Director of SSS and his officers in Akwa-Ibom and Osun States, the DPO in Eket, Mr. Sunday Digah, traditional rulers, Oba Okunade Sijuade, Ooni of Ile-Ife, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi, Obong of Calabar and the paramount ruler of Eket, Dr. Timtiniko Enodien to please use their respective good offices to find Professor J. B. Olomo.
"The search must continue until he is found, and therefore, we need to double our efforts in the search for our dear Professor. It is over two months since he disappeared mysteriously," the statement stressed.

The search committee chairman, Prof Jegede, told Daily Sun on the phone that the professor's email account had been secured, noting that there were no correspondences on the matter. He expressed concern that the police had not briefed the family and the search committee for two months on the missing Prof. "The funny thing is that, for two months now, we have not heard from the police. We wrote the Commissioners of Police of Akwa Ibom and Osun States. Initially, we thought it was a kidnap case."

Prof Jegede also expressed reservation about the way the hotel management handled the matter and said he suspected a cover up. ASUU OAU Chairman, Prof Peter Akinola, said his colleagues were worried about Prof Olomo's disappearance for over two months without any news about him.
