Nigeria & 18 others barred from US visa lottery

Nigeria and some other countries will no longer be eligible to participate in the America Diversity Visa lottery programme.
Information from the United States Department of State sighted on Sunday said Nigerians and citizens from few other countries were not eligible for DV-2015

The department said Nigeria was excluded since over 50,000 Nigerians had immigrated into the United States in the last five years. The department listed other countries not eligible as Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China (mainland-born), Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador and Haiti.
Others are India, Jamaica, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, South Korea, United Kingdom (except Northern Ireland) and its dependent territories, and Vietnam
However, many African countries would continue to enjoy the programme. Some of them are Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Congo, Cote D’Ivoire (Ivory Coast), Djibouti, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia and Ghana. Others are Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles and Sierra Leone.

Diversity visas are said to be distributed among six geographic regions, while no single country could receive more than seven per cent of the available space in any year.

Already, advertsiements for the 2015 US DV lottery have started with several businesses inviting Nigerians to apply for the program.  Applications for the 2015 US DV lottery is expected to take off from October 1, 2013.

In 2012, 14,769, 658 persons were said to have qualified worldwide for the US DV lottery among the 19, 672, 269 which applied.

Why Nigeria is disqualified for US DV-2015, Consul-General explains
by MARTHA NWACHUKWU on Sep 20, 2013

The United States Consul- General, Jeffrey Hawkins yesterday reiterated Nigeria’s disqualification for the 2015 Diversity Visa lottery. He also revealed that Nigerians were over half a million in the United States and the most educated African immigrants as studies have shown.

Nigeria and 18 other countries have been advised against applying for the 2015 Diversity visa as they have been fully represented in the immigrants group in the United States.

In a press briefing held yesterday at the US consulate on Victoria Island, Lagos and simultaneously in Abuja, Hawkins said that 50,000 Diversity visas have been made available for countries worldwide where the citizens do not have strong immigration ties with the USA.

He also said that it was not advisable for Nigerians to still apply for Diversity Visas to the USA since there has been over 50,000 immigrants from the country over a period of five years, nevertheless, Nigerians can apply for other types of visa to the States.

When asked if America has security fears as over half a million Nigerians are in the States, Jeffrey replied that it was not an issue of security, but a growing relationship between the two countries which he hopes would continue to grow.

However, those chosen for the 2014 US visa lottery in Nigeria will not be affected by this restriction. Nonetheless, applicants must have at least a diploma or work experience to enable them fend for themselves over there.

This (DV-2015) will open Tuesday, October 1, 2013, and will close on Saturday, November 2, 2013. Applicants whose countries are qualified to apply must submit entries electronically during this registration period using the electronic DV entry form (E-DV) available at the US government website dvlottery. state.gov.

Thanks Aare for this insightful post.

Unfortunately, ignorant Nigerians will still go ahead and pay 3rd parties to help and assist them in processing their applications, unaware about this latest development!
